Missing, presumed dead

You all may recall Midnight, the cat I discussed in an earlier entry. She was suffering from an abscess, so Nicole and I catnapped her and snuck her off to the vet while the neighbors weren't looking. Since then, Nicole has been feeding her and giving her lots of love, since the neighbors never let her inside and leave her only a large bowl of stale dog kibble to eat.

About three weeks ago, we heard some terrible animal fight sounds behind our apartment. We'd heard that kind of thing a couple of times before, so we didn't think much of it; raccoons squabbling over food or something like that, we figured.

Unfortunately, we haven't seen Midnight since. Nor has her owner, who has approached Nicole a couple of times to ask if she's seen the cat; she's apparently been calling shelters looking for her. We doubt she'll find her, though; the howling we've heard in the undeveloped area behind the building since then has made it obvious that there are coyotes living and hunting back there.

Nicole had fallen completely in love with Midnight; she was just about the sweetest cat we've ever met. So she's especially brokenhearted. I'm just kind of sad; I had gotten used to her standing up as I went down the stairs in the morning, looking for pets, and watching me come home in the evening from her usual perch on the landing a half-flight down our stairwell.

Sorry, Midnight. You deserved better.
