I'm in the process of filling in back entries from my old journal. This is a long and tedious process, and I'm not doing it entirely in order, as I'm leaving some of the more complicated entries (mostly those with photos) for last. So if you read back and wonder at large gaps and apparently out-of-order entries, that's what's going on.

Politics & NewsCBS News is now reporting themselves on the questions that have been raised about the validity of the documents they were given, supposedly from Bush's commanding officer's personal files. As much as it pains me to say it, it doesn't look good for CBS.

Many of the typesetting complaints on which the accusations are based look valid to me. Not all &#151 most of these memos can't be reproduced terribly accurately with MS Word on default settings, as claimed. But at least one of them can, and there are various other features common to word processors but not at all common to 1970's typewriters. Especially if Killian produced these memos himself, since I doubt many 1970's military officers were trained (or interested) in the most advanced typing techniques.

If CBS was indeed duped with forgeries, heads will deservedly roll over there. And as important as the question of how CBS could have been duped by an amateur is the question of just how big a pair is said amateur carrying around. Because seriously, anybody who had any idea what he or she was doing wouldn't have tried to get away with making such a lousy job of it.

The other casualty here, of course, besides some CBS employee(s), will be the real evidence that shows that Bush shirked his Guard duties. The Boston Globe's recent piece makes a very strong case without relying on the material CBS used — but if CBS is debunked, few people are going to pay attention to the fact that the debunking doesn't touch the Globe's work. CBS will have done more to kill this story than anybody on Bush's payroll.
