Responsibilities have included setup and administration of shared and dedicated UNIX and Mac servers, Mailman lists, Sendmail and CommuniGate mail servers, DNS servers, and a variety of other internet services; provisioning and turn-up of web hosting services; troubleshooting customer problems; providing general technical support.

Wrote a variety of systems administration tools using Python and PHP, including a domain management tool that handles BIND configuration and administration of mail services at Everyone.net via SOAP.

Built a centralized web statistics processor to process logs from WebSTAR, Apache, and IIS logs using Webalizer; program written in Python.

Configured and supported resold Google Postini services, and wrote script to parse monthly billing reports.

Transitioned customers and servers from several acquired companies onto digital.forest’s servers and network.

Responsibilities included handling customer files for direct digital output to Xerox Docutech document publishing system and ColorBus Cyclone/Xerox MajestiK color output system, full-service desktop publishing, troubleshooting and maintenance of Macintosh computer systems on Novell Netware LAN, and special projects.

Regional Desktop Publishing Specialist, 3/94 – 9/94
Kinko’s Northwest, Cascade and Olympic Regions
Regional Resource Center, Seattle, WA

Responsibilities included technical telephone support for Kinko’s customers, administration of regional FirstClass BBS for internal and customer use, and support for a videoconferencing site. Modified and maintained FileMaker Pro marketing database. Developed proposal for establishing a 56k Internet connection for the Regional Resource Center and connected store. Developed custom Internet software installer for Kinko’s managers.

Responsibilities included telephone support, sales, customer service, hardware setup and maintenance. CIT sold computers, monitors, printers, and accessories by Apple, IBM, Toshiba, NeXT, Sun, and Hewlett-Packard to Cornell students, faculty, and staff, and provided post-sale support.

The Internet Explorer Kit for Macintosh, 1994
Hayden Books, a division of MacMillan Publishing (formerly Prentice Hall)

Co-written with Adam Engst, the Explorer Kit is targeted at a nontechnical audience and explains why people use the Internet and what they do there, rather than how they do it. After three months in print, it had sold approximately 11,000 copies; few Macintosh books ever sell more than 10,000. Now available on remaindered shelves near you.
